BuildcordDocs

Quickstart

Build a slash command that replies with a greeting, then deploy it to your server.

In this tutorial, you build a /hello command that greets whoever uses it. It takes about ten minutes.

Before you begin

  • Sign in to the builder with Discord or an emailed code.
  • Have a Discord server where you can add a bot.

Create the bot

Make a new bot

In the builder, select New bot, then name it. Buildcord creates an empty bot with no flows.

Add a command flow

Open Commands, then select New command. Name it hello and give it a description such as "Say hello". The flow opens with a Slash command trigger already on the canvas.

Add a reply

Select the + below the trigger, then choose Reply from the Messages category. In the Message field, enter:

Hello, {user.mention}! Welcome to {server.name}.

The text in braces is a token. Buildcord fills it in each time the command runs.

Check for problems

Look at the lint notch above the canvas. Errors block a deploy, and warnings are worth reading but don't. A flow with a trigger and one reply has neither.

Deploy

Open Deploy, then select Deploy. When the bot's status turns online, add it to your server with the invite link shown on the same page.

Try it

In your server, enter /hello. The bot replies with your mention and the server's name.

Next steps

  • Make the reply visible only to the person who used the command. See Reply.
  • Add a Cooldown so one member can't use the command constantly.
  • Learn what else can start a flow in Triggers.
